Step-by-Step Cat Introduction Guide: From First Meeting to Peaceful Coexistence

Welcoming a new cat? Learn the 7-14 day step-by-step process to introduce cats safely and minimize conflict for a happy multi-cat home.

Decided to bring home a second cat? While your intentions are pure, cats are territorial animals, and a sudden intruder can cause immense stress. A rushed introduction can lead to lifelong animosity. This guide covers the scientifically recommended, step-by-step process for a safe and peaceful feline introduction.

Step 1: Complete Isolation (Days 1–3)

Upon arrival, the new cat should immediately go into a separate room. Let the cats sense each other's presence only through sound and scent behind a closed door. This allows the resident cat to feel secure in their territory while giving the newcomer time to adjust to the new environment.

Step 2: Scent Swapping and Territory Exchange (Days 4–7)

Exchange blankets or toys that carry each other's scent. Once they seem calm, temporarily swap their locations: let the new cat explore the living room while the resident cat explores the newcomer's room. Repeat this "scent exploration" until hissing subsides.

Step 3: Visual Contact (Through a Barrier)

Before direct contact, allow them to see each other through a screen door or a transparent barrier. Crucially, feed both cats high-value treats during this time to create a positive association: "Seeing the other cat means something good happens."

Essential Success Checklist

  • Litter boxes: The rule is number of cats + 1 (e.g., 3 boxes for 2 cats).
  • Vertical space: Increase cat trees or shelves to provide escape routes.
  • Equal attention: Always greet and feed the resident cat first to prevent jealousy.
